Dental crowns: a versatile treatment for a variety of tooth issues

If one or more of your teeth has become damaged or has aesthetic issues, your dentist may recommend a dental crown to restore the shape and appearance of the tooth while protecting it from further damage. At Shadowridge Dental Group in San Marcos, California, our dental team uses modern dental materials and techniques to restore your smile so your new crown blends in with your smile while providing optimum functionality.

A versatile restorative treatment option

Millions of patients in the U.S. have had at least one dental crown placed at some point. These versatile restorations can be used in a variety of circumstances, including:

  • Strengthening a tooth that has weakened due to decay, cracks, chips, or wear and tear
  • Protecting a tooth that has had root canal therapy
  • Holding a broken tooth together
  • Covering an oddly shaped or stained tooth to restore its appearance
  • Anchoring a dental bridge in place

Dental crowns are typically made from durable dental porcelain, which has the same color and luster as natural tooth enamel. Still, some patients opt for other materials such as stainless steel or porcelain fused to metal. Our dentist will talk with you about the options that are best for your specific needs.

What to expect

Getting a dental crown placed generally takes two dental visits. We will prepare your tooth for the crown in your first visit by shaping it and taking dental impressions. We will place a temporary crown on your tooth after your impressions are taken, which helps protect the tooth and reduce sensitivity. Then, we will send the impressions and specifications for your crown to the laboratory, where your custom crown will be fabricated. At your second visit, typically a week or two later, we will cement the crown in place after checking its fit, and you are free to enjoy your healthy new tooth!

Dental crowns are just one of many dental restorations that the team at Shadowridge Dental Group offers to restore your smile. If you are experiencing pain, sensitivity, or other problems with a tooth, we are here to help. Call our San Marcos, CA office today at (760) 284-8111 to schedule your appointment!
