Types of dentures

Dentures can be made from a variety of materials to suit your needs, such as an acrylic, nylon, or metal framework and either porcelain or resin for the teeth. From partial to full and removable to permanent, patients have never had more options when it comes to replacing their teeth with dentures.

  • Full dentures replace an entire arch of teeth
  • Partial dentures replace one or more missing teeth
  • Removable dentures are held in place with natural suction, denture adhesives, or clasps, and are completely removable for oral hygiene and sleeping
  • Permanent dentures are secured in place with dental implants and/or crowns and are not removable, but offer enhanced stability and function
  • Immediate dentures are placed on the same day as your tooth extractions so you don’t need to go for any length of time without teeth

What to expect when you get dentures?

The first step in replacing your teeth with dentures is a thorough evaluation and consultation with one of our dentists. We will evaluate your bone structure, teeth, and gums and talk with you about your treatment preferences before recommending one or more options to replace your teeth. The best type and material of denture for you will depend on a number of factors, such as how many teeth you are replacing, their location in your mouth, whether you want removable or permanent dentures, and your current oral health. If you will be having dental implants placed to secure your dentures in place, we will talk with you about that process and what to expect so you are well-educated and confident about your treatment plan.

After deciding together with you how to proceed, our dental team will take impressions of your mouth and send those to the dental laboratory, where your dentures will be custom-made for a perfect, snug fit. If appropriate, we will provide you with a temporary denture during this time. Once your new dentures are ready, you will come back in to the office and we will make any minor adjustments necessary for the optimal fit. In addition, we will spend ample time with you talking about how to take care of your new dentures and how to make the adjustment period as comfortable as possible.

Dentures and Partial Dentures FAQs

What are dentures and partial dentures? How do they differ?

Dentures are removable appliances designed to replace missing teeth and restore both function and aesthetics. A complete denture replaces all teeth in the upper or lower arch, while a partial denture fills gaps when only some teeth are missing. Partials often use clasps or precision attachments to anchor to existing teeth, whereas full dentures rely on suction, adhesives, or implant support for stability.

Who is a good candidate for dentures or partials?

Ideal candidates are people who have lost several or all their teeth but still maintain healthy gums and jawbone support. If you have multiple damaged or decayed teeth that cannot be restored, dentures may also be an option. For patients with significant bone loss, implant-supported dentures or preparatory procedures may be recommended to ensure the prosthetics fit comfortably and securely.

How long does the denture process take?

The timeline varies depending on whether extractions or healing are necessary. Typically, it involves several appointments. First, impressions and measurements are taken. Then, a trial denture may be created to evaluate fit, bite, and appearance. After adjustments, the final denture is fabricated and fitted. The entire process can range from a few weeks to a few months, depending on your needs.

Will dentures feel natural?

At first, dentures may feel bulky or awkward, and your mouth may need time to adjust. Eating, speaking, and smiling may feel different for a short period, but most patients adapt within a few weeks. Modern dentures are custom-designed for comfort and appearance, closely resembling natural teeth. Practicing with your dentures daily helps your muscles adapt more quickly.

How should I care for dentures and partials?

Dentures need daily cleaning to prevent plaque build-up and staining. Use a soft denture brush and non-abrasive cleanser, and never use regular toothpaste, as it may scratch the surface. Remove them at night, soak them in a denture-cleaning solution, and brush your gums, tongue, and any remaining teeth. Proper hygiene prolongs the life of your dentures and keeps your mouth healthy.

Can dentures be repaired or adjusted?

Yes. Dentures can be relined, rebased, or repaired if they become loose, cracked, or worn over time. It’s important not to attempt at-home fixes, as improper repairs may cause tissue irritation or further damage. A dentist can restore the fitness and function of your dentures safely, often in a single appointment.

How long do dentures usually last?

On average, dentures last between 5 – 10 years with proper care. However, the shape of your jaw and gums changes naturally over time, which may affect how well they fit. Even if they are not damaged, your dentist may recommend relining, adjustments, or replacement to maintain comfort, chewing function, and appearance.

Will dentures affect my speech or eating?

Some patients notice minor speech changes or a slight lisp at first, but this usually improves with practice. Reading aloud and repeating challenging words can help. Eating also requires an adjustment period. Begin with soft food cut into small pieces and chew evenly on both sides. Over time, most patients return to a normal diet with minimal restrictions.

Does dental insurance cover dentures?

Coverage depends on your insurance provider and plan details. Many policies categorize dentures as a major restorative service, offering partial coverage after a waiting period. Our team at Shadowridge Dental Group can review your benefits, provide cost estimates, and discuss financing options if additional help is needed.
