Dentures and Partial Dentures

How to take care of your full or partial dentures

Dentures are a terrific way to replace anywhere from one missing tooth to a full arch of teeth. At Shadowridge Dental Group, we are committed to ensuring that our patients in San Marcos areas have the best experience possible with their dentures, from your initial consultation and denture placement through your long-term follow-up care. One of the best ways to help keep your denture looking, fitting, and functioning properly is to take proper care of it each day.

Taking care of your removable dentures

While dentures will quickly become part of your everyday routine, both partial and full dentures require slightly different at-home care than your normal teeth.

  • Removable partial and full dentures should be taken out each night for cleaning and soaking.
  • Thoroughly clean the denture each day with a denture toothbrush or soft-bristled toothbrush and a denture cleanser that has the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance. We can recommend a good denture cleaner for your specific needs if you are unsure which to use. It is important not to use toothpaste or a hard-bristled toothbrush, as these are too abrasive to be used on the denture and can damage it.
  • If you are new to cleaning your dentures, placing a rag over the drain in the sink can help prevent them from accidentally slipping out of your hand and falling down the drain.
  • After your denture is cleaned, rinse it off with water and then place it in water or a soaking solution overnight.
  • Before placing your denture back in your mouth in the morning, be sure to rinse it thoroughly.

Adjustments to your dentures

While good oral hygiene and care of your denture can help maintain its fit and function, sometimes adjustments are necessary due to natural changes in the shape of your mouth over time. If your denture seems like it does not fit correctly, it is important to call your dentist to be adjusted for proper fit again. Otherwise, you may experience problems such as sores or infections.

Dentures are just one of many tooth replacement options we offer at Shadowridge Dental Group, so you can proudly show off your smile again. To schedule your appointment, call us in San Marcos, CA today at (760) 284-8111.
