When teeth become infected or damaged, prompt treatment is crucial to prevent larger issues from occurring. If a significant portion of the biting surface has become compromised, porcelain inlays and onlays are terrific options to restore functionality and aesthetics. At Shadowridge Dental Group in Vista, California, we provide custom-fabricated porcelain inlays and onlays as a natural-looking way to fix damaged teeth.
Most individuals know about composite dental fillings, which are a restoration we use to small areas of decay or damage in teeth. When the damage is more substantial than a small cavity, inlays and onlays can be used to reinforce the tooth structure while repairing any issues. Also known as partial crowns, these restorations are recommended when the damage is too extensive for a typical composite filling but not large enough to necessitate a full crown. They may also be recommended if an old restoration needs to be replaced.
The main difference between inlays and onlays is where they are placed on the teeth. Inlays are placed between the cusps of the tooth, while onlays are used when one or more cusps also need repair.
The restorative procedure for inlays and onlays requires two visits. During the first visit, Dr. James Moran will begin by removing any decay or damage from the tooth. Next, impressions are taken and sent to the laboratory for custom fabrication. The tooth will then be covered with a sealant to protect it while you wait for your final restoration.
Once the inlay or onlay is ready, you will return to the office for placement. The restoration is put in place to do a final check for proper fit and feel before it is bonded into place. The last step is polishing the restoration to look and feel natural.
